about

Earthrise Symphony is the story of the emotions of an astronaut on their first journey to space. In the first movement the astronaut is anxious about takeoff, which is quickly replaced by the surreal feeling of weightlessness upon reaching space in the second movement. In the third movement the astronaut is subjected to the emptiness and uncertainty of the moon. The fourth movement explores the Overview Effect, which is an observed cognitive shift that many astronauts experience on their way home. The second Darkspell release is musically inspired by symphonies of both the Romantic period and early 21st century, psychedelic jazz artists such as Pharaoh Sanders and Sun Ra, and dark ambient noise. The album is also thematically inspired by the photo Earthrise, taken by Apollo 8 astronaut William Anders in 1968. Earthrise Symphony uses more than 15 different instruments, free jazz improvisation, 12-tone rows, thematic development, samples, and varied noise elements to paint the picture of what it might be like to go to space.
